This one doesn't seem as exciting as the other one... It could be because it doesnt have as much stuff in the background behind the text boxes?
yes, its not meant to be standalone, but you're right. Thats the thing when dealing with magazine layout. Text is considered more important, so designers are forced to work around it. Still you make some valid points.
