The usual way (so I've read) is to not use white. Use a very pale off-white as a base, white as highlights and a stronger version of the off-white (plus tinted according to sunlight shadow colour) to shade. The thinking seems to be "nothing is white in real life, and nothing has grey shadows".
And yeah, it looks like a mechwarrior/stormtrooper hybrid :p Looks decent though.
